Approximately 50 cars have been marked with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Automobiles, walls and postal boxes were defaced, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they reported in a statement.
Police state they were notified during the night on Wednesday, when a man noticed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored substance.
The fluid had been drawn in the shape of a swastika, they added.
Officers then located many other smeared vehicles and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are banned in Germany under legislation banning the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Officials report preliminary tests indicate the fluid was likely human blood.
"At present there remains no indication as to its source; authorities are currently not informed of any injuries in relation with the event," they stated.
Local authorities stated they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the residents for details.
An important representative said the incident made him without words and had to be addressed quickly.
"This incident affects the very heart of Hanau and revives the trauma of the far-right attack five years ago," he wrote on social media, referring to the death of nine victims by a assailant aiming at people of foreign heritage in five years prior.
