SNAP Payments Scheduled to Expire for Tens of Millions Amid Prolonged US Government Shutdown

Federal agriculture authorities stated recently that monthly food benefits through a critical national welfare initiatives will not be distributed during the coming month because of the continuing federal closure.

Shutdown Extends For Nearly Four Weeks

The government shutdown lasted its 25th day as officials revealed the news, which followed appeals by more than two hundred Congressional Democrats asking agriculture officials to tap into emergency reserves to fund November's food assistance.

“Ultimately, resources are exhausted,” the USDA stated. “Now, there will be no benefits issued” starting next month.

National Consequences

Over 40 million Americans rely on these food benefits, per the USDA. Some regions, including New Mexico, use of this assistance reaches one-fifth of the population.

Documents reviewed by a major news agency indicated that the department would not access contingency funding to cover next month's assistance.

Political Stalemate

Republicans and Democrats continue to disagree over how to finance and restart government operations.

Comments by the director at a budget research center indicated that the White House had opportunities to take earlier action to ensure continuous assistance.

“Officials were able and expected to made moves before now to be prepared to utilize available money,” the statement continued. “Conversely, they might decide against it in an effort to gain political advantage” as conservative leaders work to push upper chamber Democrats to approve legislation that would reopen federal functions.

States Prepare

Governors in two affected states activated emergency protocols this week to make money available for hunger relief preparing for food benefits expiring in November.
