The pace bowler felt a problem in his left leg post-delivery of the fourth over during the morning session. The England team stated Atkinson had experienced "tightness" and was to take time away from the action in order to be assessed "over the next few hours". The concluding match in this Ashes battle beginning on 4 January gets underway at the end of the week. England have previously lost fast bowlers Mark Wood with a knee problem and Jofra Archer with an abdominal strain on the current trip. Matthew Fisher was called up to provide backup. His form was underwhelming during the first two matches, claiming a mere three wickets. He was dropped from the previous Test, only to be brought back for the Melbourne Test as Archer's replacement. Surrey's Atkinson showed better form in Melbourne, claiming a couple of wickets during the host's first knock, then making 28 while batting as one of just three English batsmen to reach double figures. After bowling one over at the end of day one, he came back the next day and had nightwatchman edging to the keeper. Unfortunately, on the final ball of the fifth over, he delivered a change of pace to the batsman and promptly felt for his hamstring. The English bowler was recalled for the Boxing Day Test following his omission the previous Test.
