Out of Europe - Next Up, Celtic Face a Crucial Fortnight

Celtic squad in action

A total of six of Celtic's upcoming seven fixtures are outside of home.

Now their European journey is over, Celtic now face a campaign-altering fortnight.

Come mid-March, they might be cruising in the league with the momentum on their side and through to the Scottish Cup semi-finals.

Alternatively, they could be further toiling to retain the championship and staring at a trophyless campaign.

The initial challenge is a trip to Ibrox on Sunday for a massive league clash, with Celtic behind Rangers by two points after playing one game fewer, with Hearts six points ahead of the title holders.

This is followed by a midweek trip to Aberdeen, before heading back to Ibrox in the Scottish Cup last eight and then welcoming high-flying and tough Motherwell.

Six of their next seven matches are away from Celtic Park. This often-criticized Celtic group is set to be put under severe pressure after a rollercoaster first two-thirds of the season.

"There will be a lot of twists and turns," stated a ex-Celtic player. "It wouldn't shock me if the league is decided on the final day. But they must prove themselves over the coming handful of games. You have to be utterly consistent, or else they will not win the trophies."

Manager Faces Selection 'Headache'

Despite the 1-0 win over Stuttgart proving moot in Celtic's bid to reach the last 16 of the Europa League, it could still turn out to be significant.

The manager changed a large number of his starting line-up and some of the squad members put in eye-catching performances to secure the club's first ever win in Germany.

Luke McCowan calmly slotted the winner after just 28 seconds and was a positive influence, while in the defence, several defenders stood out in a gutsy display.

Murray in particular stated his claim to start alongside Liam Scales. A superb defensive intervention was notable and he was confident when defending corners.

But the most talked-about display was saved for back-up goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo as he contributed significantly in a long-awaited shutout in six matches.

The first-choice goalkeeper has been under heavy criticism after a series of errors. The Finnish stepped in and made six saves, in a display described as "perfect" by a club legend.

A former Celtic goalkeeper believes Sinisalo performed well enough to start against Rangers on Sunday.

"He had some excellent saves and looked composed when he had the ball and had good anticipation," was the assessment. "It's a big decision to make at the weekend. On that performance, I would be starting him. Let him keep his place in the team now."

The Celtic manager agreed that a number of individuals have given him "plenty to consider".

"[Sinisalo] played brilliantly in the game, exceptionally. He's the talk all round the dressing room," the manager said. "He's got plenty of talent."

'Critical' Rangers Test Awaits

The additional positive of Celtic's win was that they showed they can grind out a victory.

Historically, Celtic have pitched up and naturally looked to dominate the ball from the first whistle to the last against every domestic opponent.

But this less robust side had looked more and more susceptible this year, often conceding more than one goal per game.

Having not won at Ibrox in four attempts and considering Rangers have won their past 10 home matches, a demonstration of toughness in Germany was well-timed.

Might Celtic take a slightly more pragmatic approach? Right now, it is all about winning.

"You don't need to have all the possession to win the game," noted an analyst. "You've got to work hard, defend well, get a bit of luck and have a good goalkeeper."

"Celtic have not played well this season, but they are hanging in there [in the league]. They still have a chance, with a match to spare. The players will pick up great confidence from tonight - the weekend will be a decisive one."
