The Liverpool skipper has delivered a blunt assessment of Liverpool's woeful title defence, confessing the reigning champions are in a mess and failing head coach Slot while doubting whether every player is taking responsibility for the current downturn.

The Dutch defender struggled to hold back his anger after Saturday’s heavy loss at Anfield by Nottingham Forest, a result that left Liverpool in the bottom half of the top-flight standings with a negative goal difference. “We had a productive three or four days’ preparation but in a game you are facing reality and the facts are we conceded a free-kick in the first half and a poor concession at the start of the second half,” said Van Dijk. “As a team, we're certainly failing the manager, but we’ve disappointed ourselves as well. You look at yourself first and then you support teammates, you work together to escape of this crisis because at the moment it is a difficult situation – that's the reality.

Captain’s Challenge: Take Responsibility

The skipper typically addresses the media after a match as part of his duties as Liverpool captain. This time was distinct, however. He spoke was more forceful – so loud that any teammate in the stadium corridors could hear him – and he expressed visible fury while challenging the dressing room to respond. “Anger is justified,” he emphasized. “The main thing for me is that everyone has to take responsibility.” Asked whether this is occurring, Van Dijk replied: “I don’t know. But you have to do that. It’s the main thing I expect the boys to do. It's challenging during tough periods but we must act if we want to get out of this.”

Summer Signings and Team Problems

The captain insisted that Liverpool’s problems go beyond the recent additions. “It’s tough for everyone,” he said. “What I want is for everyone to take responsibility on the field. This is necessary in order to push each other, to improve collectively. If a teammate presses, you have to follow the effort. These are fundamentals but it’s not happening enough.”

Appeal to Stick Together

Van Dijk continued: “This season we lack any steady form, we concede excessive scores, we are losing battles and everyone is responsible for it and I trust this is recognized. We have to accept duty to reverse the situation and it is easy to assign blame but unity is essential. We have been through it together and won the league and all contributed, and during a tough time you must remain united and not point fingers.

“You have to be a man and confront the hardship and go again, again and again because surrendering is not an option then you are in the wrong environment in my view, because Liverpool has been going through many adversity over recent seasons and we’ve consistently emerged of it. However, that doesn't imply it is easy, it’s tiring but there is no other way.”

The upcoming match in the domestic league is a trip to West Ham next weekend, after the midweek visit of PSV in the European competition. He said: “Wednesday is another opportunity so how should I respond, go home and cry? No, I’m going to return and analyze how we can turn this around and I trust that is the collective focus as well.”
