Lehmann Criticises English Supporters for Taunts Directed at Smith

Steve Smith batting

Smith has featured in 38 times versus the English team and scored over 3,400 runs.

English supporters ought to improve than the jeers they direct at Australian batter Smith, says ex- manager Darren Lehmann.

Smith, 36, has become a regular recipient of chants and boos from English supporters following his participation in the 2018's ball-tampering scandal.

He was removed as skipper and barred for a full year while Darren Lehmann, who was cleared of any offense, resigned as coach in the wake of the episode.

"The jeers you receive is constant," Darren Lehmann remarked. "It's astonishing."

"Smith is performing every day. It must be worse for him."

"Among English crowds they just never forget. It is like they have never made a mistake in their lives."

"It's just the ones that consume excess alcohol and behave like fools."

History of the Ball-Tampering Incident

During a Test match versus South Africa, Smith admitted Australia's "captain's group" formulated a strategy to alter the cricket ball.

Ex- opening batsman Warner instructed batter Cameron Bancroft how to utilize sandpaper to scuff up the ball, and he was then spotted carrying it out by TV cameras during play. The two players were also banned along with Steve Smith.

Fallout and Ongoing Reaction

Steve Smith came back following the ball-altering episode in the 2019 Ashes series Test at Edgbaston Stadium and has been booed repeatedly since.

English fans also center chants on his tearful news conference in 2018.

"We made the wrong thing, accept it and move on," Lehmann commented.

"You try to move on the as well as possible. One faces recalled constantly and this is part and parcel."

"He can be proud with how he deals with everything."

"The Barmy Army ought to be better than that. The majority act that way and are very supportive of the proceedings in the game."
