A uniquely yellow-fronted residential building in the background assisted us verify the video.
We are checking video footage and photographs posted this morning that show the scene of a alleged car bomb explosion that Russian officials state fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he later died of his injuries. An investigation is under way.
Our starting point to verify the location from which the pictures were from was based on posts saying the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to match the distinctive yellow hue of a nearby residential complex captured in the footage.
Locating other structures, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed where the footage were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the visuals had not been manipulated.
