Eric Adams Plans to Back Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayoral Race

New York City Mayor Eric Adams revealed his intention to support Andrew Cuomo in the forthcoming mayoral race, even after months of disagreements between the two Democratic figures.

A Surprising Reversal After Recent Criticism

Just last month, the mayor had publicly condemned the former governor, describing him as a “snake and a untruthful person” and alleging of having “a career of marginalizing Black political contenders.” However, in a new development, Mayor Adams made a U-turn, stating he now intends to support Cuomo in communities where he holds significant backing.

“I think that it is imperative to energize the Black and brown communities that have suffered from gentrification on how vital this race is,” Adams remarked.

He added, “They have watched their rents increase due to gentrification and they have been disregarded in those areas, and I plan to visit to those communities and speak one on one with community leaders and organizations and I’m going to walk with the former governor in those neighborhoods and get them engaged.”

Election Landscape and Current Developments

The mayoral contest has so far been shaped by the contest between Cuomo and progressive candidate Zohran Mamdani, whose growing support has made headlines globally and symbolized hopes for a rejuvenated leftwing of the Democratic party.

During a latest candidate forum, both the democratic socialist and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa announced they would reject the mayor's support if offered.

Earlier this year, the mayor had launched his bid for another term as an independent after being indicted on legal accusations which were later dropped in return for Adams’s cooperation with government enforcement actions across New York City.

At an unrelated press conference on the same day, Adams answered journalists inquiring into the support announcement by saying, “Andrew and I will appear together later today.”

The announcement followed a day after the two politicians were spotted sitting courtside together at the New York Knicks’ season opener at the famous arena, which took place right after a heated candidate debate.
