Democratic lawmakers Criticize Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Death Penalty

Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated outrage after the ex-president accused a coalition of Democratic legislators of being "turncoats" and declared they should be arrested and punished "by death" following their posting of a contentious video.

The Message That Triggered the Debate

The video footage, published on Tuesday, includes six Democratic lawmakers who in the past acted in defense or intelligence positions.

"Like us, you all took an oath to defend and defend this constitution," the representatives declared in the short video. "And right now, the threats to our governing document are not only from overseas, but from domestically. Our laws are unambiguous, you can refuse improper directives, you can refuse improper directives, you have to reject illegal orders. No one has to follow directives that violate the legal system or our founding principles."

The Former President's Incensed Reply

The clip seemed to provoke a heated response from the former president.

On the following morning, Trump wrote on his preferred platform: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In a separate post, he stated: "This constitutes really bad, and Risky to our Country. Their statements cannot be permitted to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a third message, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a comment that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Democratic Representatives React

Following Trump's remarks on that day, Top Democrats issued a combined statement censuring the remarks.

"Political violence has no role in this nation," they declared. "Congress members who were featured in the video all served our country with tremendous loyalty and honor. We clearly condemn Donald Trump's disgusting and risky threats of violence against congressional representatives, and urge House Republicans to strongly do the same."

The Democratic leaders also said that they had been in communication with security officials "to make certain the safety of these officials and their loved ones."

"Donald Trump must right away remove these extreme online messages and withdraw his dangerous discourse before he leads to violence," the declaration added.

Lawmakers' Defiant Response

The officials who were featured in the video also published a declaration.

"We identify as ex-military personnel and security experts who value this United States and swore an vow to protect and support the national charter of the United States," they said. "This commitment continues forever, and we intend to honor it. No warning, pressure, or call for violence will stop us from that important obligation."

"The significant point is that the former president deems it subject to penalty by capital punishment for us to restate the statutes," they added. "Armed forces members should understand that we have their support as they fulfill their pledge to the constitution and duty to adhere to only lawful orders. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our responsibility."

They stated: "The entire nation must come together and denounce the president's demands for our death and partisan aggression. This is a period for moral clarity."

Further Governmental Reactions

The Democratic Senate minority leader also condemned Trump's remarks and posted on digital platforms: "We must be absolutely clear: the President of the United States is requesting the capital punishment of elected officials."

He stated: "This constitutes an direct THREAT. Every Senator, each house member, the entire nation – regardless of party – should denounce this immediately and without qualification."

The Conservative official defended Trump's claim that the Democrats had engaged in "rebellion", labeling the video as "highly unsuitable", commenting: "This constitutes very harmful, you have leading members of the legislature telling troops to ignore directives, I think that's historic in the nation's past."

The Conservative representative also reportedly stated to media outlets that in what he reviewed of Trump's publications, Trump was "explaining the offense of treason" but that "lawyers have to analyze the language and establish all that."

Administration Reaction

During a executive branch meeting on Thursday afternoon, when questioned by a journalist, "Would the president want to kill members of Congress?", the executive branch representative responded: "No."

"We should understand about what the ex-commander in chief is reacting to," the official said. "We see active officials of the American legislature who worked together to arrange a video message to members of the American armed forces, to active duty service members urging them to disobey the president's legal commands."

She added: "The integrity of our defense system depends on the hierarchy, and if that structure is compromised, it can cause fatalities, it can lead to disorder, and that's what these congressional representatives ... are essentially supporting."
