Cameron Norrie achieved the most important victory of his career by rebounding from a lost first set to overcome world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz with a stunning comeback in the early stage of the Paris Masters.

Although he had previously defeated Alcaraz on two prior meetings, this triumph marks Norrie's first ever success over a reigning world number one.

"Enormous. So big for me," commented Norrie, who joins as the newest UK male player in the record books to defeat a world No 1. "Coming back from health issues last year, I was defeated in the initial match of qualies here. I just aimed to embrace my tennis in the latter part of the year. To secure a victory like this, it's the most significant win of my career, my initial victory over the world No 1 and probably the strongest competitor in the world right now."

The British player, ranked No 31, also ended Alcaraz's supreme sequence of nine finals in a row and 17 consecutive Masters 1000 wins, which represented the finest stretch of results in the Spaniard's early professional path.

The top seed seemed to be advancing smoothly towards victory early on as he eased past the first set.
