Once the slowpoke at the first position had finally paid for a cleaning product, his sausage roll, and some breakfast items, I could have sworn overhearing the cashier bid him a wonderful day. Odd. Maybe it was a mistake, or maybe she did say it and meant it ironically. I pondered if she could even be a comrade in my battle with dithering, sharing my contempt for those who delay straightforward customers including me. Taking a step forward, now third in line. The next shopper of the queue finished pumping gas with notable efficiency. And there it was again: “Have a wonderful day.” To be precise, it was “have a wonderful day”. A stateside native? Here in Stourbridge? The pronunciation indicated it, and no British person wishes anyone those exact words, or simply a good day. Highly unusual. You don’t get US citizens knocking around Stourbridge, and definitely not holding jobs in fueling spots or anywhere else. I was second now.
